Hurtigruten offers you the chance to travel meaningfully. The expeditions are founded in the preferences of people who prioritize learning and personal growth over luxury, building on our explorer legacy that dates back to 1893. In terms of environmentally friendly polar exploration travel, Hurtigruten leads the world. They provide exceptional experiences and teach knowledge in a way that has the least negative impact on the environment. They are able to provide you with distinctive nature-based experiences in off-the-beaten-path locations because of their distinctive heritage, highly qualified crews, and a diverse fleet of swift, intimately-scaled expedition ships. Hurtigruten (lit. “Express Route”), officially Hurtigruten Bergen-Kirkenes (“coastal route Bergen-Kirkenes”), is a Norwegian public coastal route that carries both passengers and freight between ports north of Troms as well as locally, regionally, and between the ports of call. Hurtigruten offers 34 ports of call on northbound sailings and 33 ports of call on southbound sailings on daily, dependable, year-round service between Bergen and Kirkenes. 320 passengers, 120 berths, and 150 Euro-pallets of cargo are the minimum capacity standards set by Norway’s Ministry of Transport and Communications. With an optional one-year extension, the current contract with the privately held business Hurtigruten AS went into effect on 1 January 2012 and ended on 31 December 2019. The route will be run by the two businesses Hurtigruten AS and Havila Kystruten AS starting in 2021. One of Havila Kystruten’s ships was pulled out of service as of April 2022; as a result of sanctions brought on by the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the ship lacked insurance; at the time, the 4 ships of” the firm were being financed by a Russian company.

Why choose Hurtigruten to explore?

why hurtigruten

They’ve compiled just a few of the numerous reasons why traveling with them is so special. They have held the belief that discovering new places and learning about our wonderful planet should go hand in hand ever since they embarked on their first voyage to Svalbard in 1896. Because of this, their fleet of contemporary adventure ships is built to reach even the most difficult of locations while offering a beautiful and comfortable environment to take in the beauties of nature.

The Expedition Team, a group of specially chosen professionals, leads passengers on shore landings, kayaking excursions, expedition boat activities, and much more on Hurtigruten Expeditions trips. They have experts on their team because they think science is essential to comprehending the world. Their teams are available to assist guests with using the onboard scientific equipment and directing them on Citizen Science projects that support ongoing international research if they want to learn more. Additionally, because of their dedication to environmentally friendly travel and our goal to preserve the locations they visit, their passengers help pave the path for more environmentally friendly cruises. They assist individuals in releasing their inner explorer by offering varied and special excursion cruises to 15 different locations throughout the world, stopping at more than 230 ports and landing locations from bustling cities to remote islands. They caution people who join us on an expedition cruise to be ready for life-altering experiences and to expect the unexpected!

History of Hurtigruten

The first Hurtigruten ships were only steamships for carrying mail and cargo. Hurtigruten, which translates to “rapid route,” was the name given to the first one, which sailed the trip once a week beginning in 1893. It traveled up and down the coast, bringing supplies and mail to small communities along the way. After the first steamship route was introduced by the firm, it soon launched a second steamer for adventurous travelers to sail to Spitsbergen. Since then, the business has grown to the point where a ship now departs from Bergen every day and travels six days to the north before returning six days later. It continues to operate as a working ship, carrying out its duty of transporting mail and freight to all of the ports along the route even though the vessels it now employs are tiny cruise ships. Hurtigruten’s transition to hybrid electricity is a recent event worth noting. One of its hybrid vessels, the MS Roald Amundsen, which has a capacity of 530 and is used for global “expedition journeys,” has already been put into operation. A Hurtigruten journey is a cruise, but not in the way that you most likely envision a cruise.

What is an expedition cruise?

Expect the Unexpected

Embarking on an expedition, When you go on an expedition, you’ll visit some of the world’s most inaccessible and pristine locations. These are places where animals roam freely and nature rules supreme. Their expedition cruise itineraries are not entirely fixed in stone. This enables you to adapt quickly to difficult situations and seize fresh chances for investigation as they present themselves. A crucial and thrilling feature of adventure cruises is the ability to change our path.

The Locations

Beyond the typical sights and famous cities, see rural villages and undiscovered vistas that few people get to experience. Discover unusual and exotic species everywhere you look, including elks, eagles, penguins, polar bears, walruses, and whales. With them, you can go to destinations that many people have only ever dreamed of seeing, including Antarctica, Alaska, Norway, Lake Titicaca, the Northwest Passage, Machu Picchu, the Caribbean, the Gálapagos Islands, Svalbard, the British Isles, and many more.

Hurtigruten Ships

ships to medium-sized, hybrid-powered ships make up their exploration fleet. You’ll feel at home aboard your haven at sea, with a casual, welcoming ambiance, cozy cabins, opulent suites, and chic décor constructed of natural materials. Each of these new ice-class vessels combines cutting-edge technology with effective engines and light fuels to make them ideal for polar sailing. The heart and nerve center of the ship and the onboard science centers are equipped with simple and amazing microscopes and a staggering collection of geological and biological slides.

Considering Sustainability Seriously

They have learned the value of being green from more than a century of exploration of our blue planet. Over many years, their Captains, crew, expedition teams, and repeat visitors have personally observed the effects of climate change on the arctic regions that are most vulnerable. They want pristine environments with clean water and air to continue to exist in the Arctic, Antarctica, and everywhere else in between. The core of who they are and what they do is sustainability. They want to make sure that their adventure cruises respect both the stunning natural world and isolated people.

BOARDING OF HURTIGRUTEN SHIP?

Although it will take a while to get through the process, you will find the boarding process to be quick and easy. There are people to help you get on board and settle in, they are courteous and professional. After dropping off your belongings at the Hurtigruten terminal, travelers are free to explore Bergen for a while or proceed to board the ship. Luggage has already been brought to the proper cabin door by the time the cabins are made available, at 18:00. Passengers are given a card to unlock the cabin, but it also doubles as a credit card-linked payment card that can be used everywhere on board. This makes it simply possibly too simple to spend money in addition to the nearly all-inclusive costs for lodging and meals.

Description of the ship “The Nordnorge MS”

Here is a description of the ship “The Nordnorge” so that you get an idea about the various ships with Hurtigruten.

  • The ship, the MS Nordnorge, is elegantly and slickly decorated without any glamor. A panorama salon with large windows and comfortable chairs is located in the front (front) of the boat on level 7. Along level 4’s one sides are more plush seating areas and big windows.
  • There is a walkway outside that circles Level 5 completely, but since the wind is typically quite strong, people rarely use it. There is a sizable outdoor area with lounge seats on Level 7’s stern (back). It has areas that are quite wind-sheltered and areas that aren’t.
  • A flat, open floor aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Nordnorge’s level 7 has several rows of mostly vacant lawn chairs. Mountains can be seen in the distance.
  • There are no theaters, musical acts, or casinos in Nordnorge. On level 7, with a view, there is a small gym with basic exercise equipment, along with two hot tubs and a sauna. Its entertainment options end there.
  • This is where it diverges so significantly from regular large cruise ships, according to everything I’ve heard. Hurtigruten does not assume responsibility for its passengers’ entertainment because it is a working ship. They have straightforward, uncomplicated approaches.
  • If you travel, the gorgeous scenery and the company are a great source of entertainment for you. The ship’s loudspeakers play announcements in Norwegian, English, and German every day. The announcements cover topics including where the next stop is, how many people live in the town, and other general information.
  • Passengers are made aware of gatherings for information and other events. The announcements are not particularly audible in the room; to hear them better, you have to typically get up and open the door.
  • Even though there is no entertainment provided by the ship, it does have an “expedition team” of young people who lead educational lessons about places in general as was mentioned above that they have a team of professional guides.
  • These brief, frequently humorous, and usually educational events typically last no more than a half hour. Some of these meetings take place indoors, on Level 4, in a conference room. Others are kept on Level 7’s open deck, where staff members from the expedition team can point out sights and provide further details about them.

Cabins on Hurtigruten

  • With a full double bed that hardly fits, it is pretty compact. However, the bed is high enough for room under it for suitcases and the bedding is of a high caliber. You will have a closet for your clothes and a lot of cabinets. You will also have a little desk at which you could work and a kettle with supplies for making tea and coffee.
  • The restroom is so small that two people cannot simultaneously brush their teeth. Although it occupies a triangle bathroom corner, the shower provides good water pressure. Toiletries are stored on wall-mounted shelves.  A live picture from the ship’s bow can be seen on a channel of the flat-screen TV that is mounted on the wall.
  • The location of the boat is marked on a map that is displayed on a different channel. The other stations are typical Norwegian ones, some of which air content from the United Kingdom or the United States.
  • By the way, everything is immaculately preserved and tidy. Other room types, both more expensive and less expensive, are available on the ship. Suites and “mini-suites,” which each contain two rooms on an upper floor, are available at the top end.
  • Then there are the higher-floored Artic excellent cabins. Then, on lower, medium, or upper floors, are a variety of “polar inside” and “polar outside” cabins. They all appear to be roughly the same size and have two, occasionally three, beds.
  • Depending on the level they are on, the outer ones may have portholes or windows while the inner ones might not. Single bed on the right, crimson sofa to the left. Back wall with a sizable window, with a desk and chair in the front third-floor polar outdoor cabin
  • Everyone from the staff makes sure that you are provided with everything you need over there, by this description of the ship you probably got your answer of how ships are at Hurtigruten.

What distinguishes Hurtigruten Expedition Cruises from The Coastal Express?

The Coastal Express journeys differ from traditional cruises. Their 11 coastal ships go from Bergen to Kirkenes and back along the Norwegian coast. Every day,  they depart from Bergen and make 34 port calls, connecting cities and villages with breathtaking fjords and UNESCO World Heritage Sites along more than 1,000 miles of Norway’s unspoiled coastline. The ability to explore and engage with Norway’s beauty and charm and its people is unsurpassed because of this combination of local interactions, breathtaking scenery, and additional optional excursions.

Hurtigruten Expeditions continues the legacy of exploration that dates back to 1893, appealing to those who place a higher emphasis on meaningful experiences and personal development than on excessive luxury. One of seven closely-scaled adventure ships operated by Hurtigruten Expeditions will carry you along with a highly competent crew and expedition team (MS Fram, MS Maud, MS Santa Cruz II, MS Spitsbergen, MS Fridtjof Nansen, MS Otto Sverdrup, and MS Roald Amundsen). You can embark on these expedition cruises to explore remote regions of the world, including Antarctica, Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, Europe, North America, South America, the Caribbean, and Central America, as well as the Northwest Passage and the Atlantic Ocean.

Are there any discounts available for kids?

Their discounted child rate, which is available for brand-new reservations on all Expedition Cruises, is subject to modification at any moment. Only the cruise component of the child’s package is discounted by 50% when the child is housed in a cabin with at least two adults. A 20% discount is only applied to the cruise portion of the child’s package when they share a cabin with one adult. Where available, a 20% discount is offered on the non-cruise elements of a package, regardless of cabin occupancy. Children are those who are 2 to 15 years old at the time of sailing. This offer can be booked online or over the phone, and it can be combined with all other current offers.

Please take note: – The captain reserves the right to allow children under the age of 12 to participate in small-boat landings during expedition cruises.

The minimum age for travel to Antarctica is five years old, as per the regulations of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators.

When are trips available, how can I book one?

  • The majority of excursions can be pre-booked online and added to your trip at any time. The ‘Experiences’ column on the relevant cruise page lists the excursions available on your Coastal or Explorer voyage.
  • Excursions can be added while making a phone reservation for a coastal journey at any time up until four weeks before departure (two weeks if you pay by credit card). Please be aware that reservations for Explorer excursions can only be made four weeks before departure due to capacity restrictions (two weeks if paid by credit card).
  • All excursions are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and are contingent upon availability. When possible, they advise making reservations on the phone or online.
  • Bookings for excursions that cannot be made in advance can be made with the ship’s tour guide. The price of excursions that are booked on board will be paid in Norwegian Kroner (NOK), and it may alter due to exchange rate fluctuations.
  • If you have reserved a spot or intend to participate in any of the snowmobile or ATV excursions, please bring your driver’s license. Maximum/minimum numbers, sailing times, weather, and/or local conditions all have an impact on excursions and the information they contain.
  • If pre-arranged excursions must be canceled, you will be given a reimbursement in NOK while on board. Please be aware that for excursions that include an overnight stay, or excursions that include a set hotel, you do not have a choice of hotels.

Can we use a credit card and cash on the ship?

  • On The Coastal Express trips, you can pay as you go with cash or a credit card on their ships. They regret that the system does not support Maestro cards, but they do accept Visa, American Express, Diners, or MasterCard. Please be aware that your account will be charged in NOK if you use your credit card aboard the ship. Your payment card company’s confirmed exchange rate will be used.
  • On Expedition cruises, only credit cards are allowed; however, MS Nordstjernen does not take American Express. The credit card needs to still be active three months after your cruise.
  • Please be aware that using your credit card aboard the ship will result in a EUR deduction to your account (except MS Nordstjernen which will be debited in NOK). Your payment card company’s confirmed exchange rate will be used.
  • On all of our ships, they also provide a Cruise Card system for your convenience. You can use this system to bill your cruise card for all onboard purchases. All onboard points of sale allow the creation of cruise card accounts.
  • They accept cash payments in NOK, EUR, GBP, or USD as well as VISA, Mastercard, Diners, and American Express. An email will be used to deliver the itemized. The email will be used to deliver the itemized statement. If you need a printed version, please get in touch with reception. On your final night aboard, the cruise card account must be settled by 10:00 p.m.
  • Your cruise card charges will be charged automatically to your credit card for your convenience. The credit card must have at least three more months of remaining validity. Before disembarking, any irregularities must be notified. This also holds if you want to make a mixed payment using a credit card and cash.
  • The above-described currency is used onboard. The exchange rates are comparable to hotel prices. Please inquire about payment options at the front desk. Please be aware that using your credit card to make onboard purchases may necessitate entering a PIN.

Why do I need to fill out the Ship Manifest Information Form and the Medical Forms?

  • The Ship Manifest Information Form is required for customs, airline tickets, and immigration offices. As soon as your reservation is confirmed, please complete the Hurtigruten questionnaire (which will be provided to you) and return it to them. Please be aware that until they have received the completed form, they cannot provide your travel documents.
  • All visitors are required to complete a Medical Screening Form for select distant locations, such as Antarctica, the Northwest Passage, Northeast Greenland, and transatlantic journeys. Our medical partner Vikand reviews the paperwork. However, the approval of your embarkation does not imply that they have examined you or determined that it would be safe for you to participate in an Expedition Cruise or any associated activities. Regarding the safety or suitability of joining an expedition cruise, you must only rely on the advice of your doctor.
  • Their medical partner, Vikand, checks the forms after they are submitted. Being permitted to embark, however, does not imply that they have given you medical advice about whether it would be wise or safe for you to participate in an Expedition Cruise or any associated activities. Regarding the safety or suitability of joining an expedition cruise, you must only rely on the advice of your doctor.
  • The Medical Screening Form is divided into two parts. The traveler must submit and upload both sections A and B, which must be completed by a doctor. The form requires secondary authentication, and to complete the digital signature, you will need a mobile phone to get a verification code. The form will be emailed to you after you have completed Section A online and signed it. You can print it out and take it to your doctor to be signed.
  • Please upload the completed form to Vikand’s portal between 4 and 8 weeks before your departure. If the necessary information is missing, you might need to submit the form again.

Hurtigruten Prices

The Hurtigruten cruises, or any cruise, are not recommended for people on a strict budget. They are expensive, and the price rises if you purchase drinks. The excursions are pricey but of high quality; you pay more for the peace of mind that you’ll return to the boat on schedule. On the other hand, the cost covers all meals, together with daily access to the truly stunning landscapes, along with good, clean, well-designed lodging.

It is challenging to provide an accurate price quote because the pricing is dynamic, just like those used by airlines. Additionally, they vary by ship, by the cabin, and by season (summer is more expensive than winter). Visit their website to learn more.

Pricing advice: Southward is frequently less expensive than northward. However, keep in mind that the costs are all-inclusive unless you consume alcohol. On land, Norway is also an extremely pricey nation. In Norway, your $1200 per person, six-night trip works out to $200 per person per night for lodging and all meals.

FAQ

Can I switch from full board to half board on an Expedition or Coastal Express cruise?

Unfortunately, neither The Coastal Express nor Hurtigruten Expeditions allow you to upgrade to half board. On expedition cruises, full board is the sole option. Our suite passengers on Expedition Cruises will be eligible for extra services.

Why am I paying more than the online “from price”?

They provide variable pricing, just like an airline would if you were making a flight reservation. This indicates that the form price represents the lowest price at which an I-grade (interior) cabin could be purchased. Prices are limited by capacity and dependent on availability. Before the departure date, prices are subject to change. The current price will be presented at the time of booking.

Is WiFi available on every ship?

Yes, WiFi is a paid service offered on all ships. WiFi is offered on your cruise if you have a SELECT* or PLATINUM package reserved. Please be aware that owing to the remote places in which they travel, internet connectivity and telephone usage may be unavailable or restricted depending on the position of the ship. Unless you specifically book an unnamed cabin while making an online reservation, you are automatically assigned a cabin in the SELECT package.

Which ships have Jacuzzis and fitness centers?

The MS Roald Amundsen, MS Fram, the MS Spitsbergen, the MS Midnatsol, the MS Trollfjord, the MS Polarlys, the MS Kong Harald (please note that the Jacuzzi is not currently in use), the MS Nordkapp, and the MS Finnmarken all have Jacuzzis (MS Finnmarken has a pool as well). There are workout centers on every ship but the MS Lofoten.

Do I need to bring my ID or passport?

All passengers checking in at the Hurtigruten terminal or aboard our ships are required to show a current passport or another form of government-issued identification. Only passports that are valid for six months after the cruise are accepted on explorer voyages. As soon as you make a reservation, kindly provide us with your passport information.

Why am I paying more than the online “from price”?

Do I require a PIN to use my credit card?

When paying with a credit card over the phone or online, you don’t require a pin code. You must provide the credit card’s type, number, expiration date, and Card Verification Code

Is it secure to take a Hurtigruten flight? How does Hurtigruten approach the matter with Corona?

Your well-being, safety, and health are incredibly important to them. All of their ships now follow several new protocols that are intended to protect you from Covid-19. These measures will be routinely updated following the most recent recommendations from regional authorities.

CONCLUSION

It’s all about the coastal landscape because this isn’t your typical cruise. There is always something to look at as the ships travel through an inner route between skerries and islands. While sailing near the land, there are occasions when you almost think you can touch it. A 30-minute stop is a plenty because many of the stations are in extremely small settlements with little things to do. Larger cities pause for longer, giving you time to stroll around. Some excursions take into account the schedule, allowing you to disembark at one port and rejoin at a different one. It’s an amazing journey and far superior to those huge ships that ruin so many ports and cities by dumping thousands of passengers for a short period. Hurtigruten uses its ships to transport guests who help to sustain the service it offers to tiny villages.

And this is my new blog where I am trying my best to bring the best and impressive content for ardent readers.
